A new and deadly strain of Coronavirus, which can kill cats, has been detected in the United Kingdom, according to scientists.

They fear the new hybrid strain from Cyprus could be in the UK and poses a threat to the feline population. Boffins believe the Covid strain could spread rapidly through the UK after causing 8,000 pet deaths on the Mediterranean island.

The carrier cat is undergoing further tests and treatment after being isolated by its owner after developing symptoms which led to a positive Covid test.

Though the strain is not linked to the Covid-19 which caused a global pandemic and lockdowns across the country and globe, scientists do fear it is the same "genetic fingerprint" found in a Coronavirus specific to animals.

F-CoV-23, the current strain found in the test cat and also existing in a number of canines and felines around the globe, had infected 91 cats in Cyrpus. The virus is believed to have killed at least 8,000 cats since the start of this year.

But experts believe the real number could be far higher and may even push 300,000. Cypriot officials confirmed emergency measures were in place to try and control the outbreak on the "island of cats".

Vets and volunteers are now hard at work protecting and caring for infected animals and attempting to prevent the disease from doing even further damage to the feline population, the Daily Mail reported. Dr Christine Tait-Burkard spoke of the "new virus" which is readily spreading through the cat population.

Dr Tait-Burkard said: "This new virus appears to spread readily and no longer relies on changes or mutations in the host. Our evidence suggests the virus may spread directly from cat to cat by faecal contamination, just like the cat and dog coronaviruses it originated from.

"For example, if a cat uses the same litter tray, or outdoor area, as an infected cat and then licks its paws." Dinos Agiomamitis, Head of Cats PAWS Cyprus and vice-president of Cyprus Voice for Animals believes a third of the cat population in the south has already died as a result of the virus.

Two treatments are currently being considered by the island. One would be to use a drug called remdesivir which was used for Covid-19 treatment. Another would be the use of molnupiravir, an antiviral drug used to treat humans also.
