The Champs Elysees in Paris may be a cultural hotspot known for its theatres, cafes and shops but for some Tripadvisor reviewers it’s overpriced, crowded and pretentious.

This central route is over a mile long, 230ft wide and was hailed in the 19th century as the most beautiful avenue in the world.

But tourists have criticised the famous route in the French capital for being a tourist trap and nothing special.

Tripadvisor reviewer, Jennifer R, from South Carolina, warned of crowds, but noted it was the best part of the Champs Elysees in her comments.

Jennifer, who has written 17 Tripadvisor reviews, said: “We did not go into any stores, nor did we attempt to do so. The only reason we were here was really to see the Arc de Triomphe and, as it turned out, to eat some very overpriced pizza.

This is to be expected in touristy areas in Paris, no doubt.

“The Arc de Triomphe, which we at the last minute opted to go up in, was worth waiting for and was the best part of avenue des Champs Elysees.”

Another reviewer, writing from the account robsT9648IO, commented in August: “Once a promenade for the rich and other locals, this famous street is now merely a venue for impossibly priced stores, where the scene is to be seen.

“Pretentious and well and truly unremarkable and avoidable.”

Jenny Z gave the place one star, writing: “My husband referred to this street as a ‘weird, tourist trap pilgrimage’.

“It’s just a big outdoor mall – with many of the stores just being regular American Mall stores. It’s worth it only as the way to get to Arc de Triomphe.”

Don’t miss…
