A man has been arrested in connection with a bus crash in Manchester which has left a dozen people injured and one woman fighting for her life.

The single-decker bus mounted the kerb next to Piccadilly Gardens and smashed into the front of a T4 bubble tea store. The glass front of the store at Piccadilly bus station was shattered on Monday (October 16) and left a dozen injured.

Following the major incident, which saw police block the area off and erect white tents with cordons as part of a huge emergency services response, a 64-year-old man was arrested, MEN reports.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed a man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He is currently in custody ahead of questioning as one woman battles life-threatening injuries.

A total of 12 people were injured in the crash, with both passengers and pedestrians treated at the scene for minor injuries. Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are now appealing to members of the public who may have any information on the crash. A scene remained in place throughout Monday as enquiries continued.

Fire services, police presence and paramedics were all reported at the scene, with the North West Ambulance Service confirming a number of casualties were treated at the scene.

One person at the scene described the crash as "properly horrendous". Well wishes were sent in from members of the public online as police confirmed the incident.

Their statement at the time read: "At 1:15pm today (Monday, October 16) two fire engines from Manchester Central and Salford fire stations as well as the technical response unit from Ashton fire station were called to an incident on Parker."

Bus routes and Metrolink statements in the immediate area near the City Hotel were suspended indefinitely, with trams not stopping at the station while bus services to Piccadilly Gardens were stopped.
