A Russian microchip factory likely producing technology for sophisticated weapons has been targeted in a significant strike, Daily Express US has heard.

A drone downed over the Bryansk region in Russia this week fell on the Kremny EL factory, dubbed “Silicon El”, according to the Mash Telegram channel.

Military blogger Romanov Light said a fire broke out at the plant’s 16th building and was extinguished around an hour later – at 1.50am local time. Staggering footage shared online shows the shocking moment the plant was struck.

Michael Bociurkiw, global affairs analyst and senior fellow at The Atlantic Council, told Daily Express US the microchip factory was a significant target.

It was one of several Russian sites struck in one of the biggest waves of attacks on Russian soil since Putin’s illegal war began.

And targets that help supply the Putin war machine such as these factories.

“The strikes were brilliantly, strategically thought out but when you tie this together, they are meant to weaken the ability of Russia to push more aggression into Ukraine.”

Some of Russia’s most sophisticated weapons systems are known to rely on microtechnologies.

A Royal United Services Institute study found that large volumes of foreign-made microelectronics are contained in some of Russia’s most advanced killing machines.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Investigators analysed 27 Russian weapons systems and pieces of military equipment that were lost or expended since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion to find that “it is heavily reliant on imports of sophisticated microelectronics to operate effectively”.

In fact, it was discovered that of the 450 components in Russian military systems RUSI assessed, 318 appear to have been made by US companies.

But now that Russia has been heavily sanctioned by the West, it may need to rely on its own technological expertise to keep manufacturing advanced weaponry, hinting at why the Bryansk microchip factory was targeted.

According to OSINT for Ukraine, the “domestic production of chips in Russia is limited” to two major companies – Mikron and Angstrem.

It said: “Both have faced significant setbacks due to a military focus on chip production, and Russia’s inability to match the success of Western commercial entities in this sector.

Don’t miss… “While the first company barely developed chips 20-30 years behind in capability, the second one went bankrupt. The military focus in chip production has meant failure for Russia compared to the success of Western commercial entities, dating back to Soviet times.”

Strikes have rained down on Russian land repeatedly this week.

The factory was just one of six areas targeted in a huge wave across Putin’s turf on Wednesday.

Strikes were also reported on the Cherekhinsky military base, while the Black Sea port of Sevastapol was hit with naval drones, according to Kremlin officials.

Bociurkiw said: “Ukraine is bringing the war to the doorsteps of average Russians and the Russian elite. This also threatens Putin’s hold on power and it is a huge humiliation.”

Follow our social media accounts here on facebook.com/ExpressUSNews and @expressusnews
