Russia’s ambassador to Iran Levan Jagarian said Moscow would have “no problem” selling S-400 systems to Iran when the United Nation’s arms embargo on the country expires on October 18. He told the Resalat daily newspaper Russia was “not afraid” of threats from US President Donald Trump.

Mr Jagarian said: “We are not afraid of US threats and we will live up to our commitments,” Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported.

It comes after Russia rejected US plans to restore UN sanctions on Iran, labelling it as absurd, adding that it has no legal or political grounds to do so.

In response, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Russia of US sanctions if they refused to reimpose the UN measures on the Islamic Republic.

The US submitted a letter to the 15-member UN Security Council accusing Tehran of non-compliance, starting a 30-day clock that could lead to a “snapback” of UN sanctions.

Mr Pompeo insisted the measures which were suspended as part of a 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran were now back in force despite opposition from allies who have rejected the move as invalid.

He announced the US had re-imposed international sanctions using a so-called “snapback” mechanism in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

But all the remaining parties to the nuclear deal – Germany, France, Britain, Russia and China – immediately notified the Security Council, saying they did not recognise the US move.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani thanked other nations for resisting Washington and claimed Mr Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran had led to the isolation of his administration.

Mr Rouhani described the effort to reimpose sanctions as “illegal and incorrect” and warned Washington will face consequences for its unilateralism.

He said: “We can say that the maximum US pressure against the Iranian nation in the political and legal fields has not only failed but also turned into the maximum isolation of the United States.”

Mr Rouhani also singled out Russia and China as “two friendly countries”, praising them for “standing firm against the irrationality of the United States, both in the past and the present”.

Tensions between Iran and the US have been strained throughout the past two years and ever since Mr Trump pulled out of the landmark nuclear deal in 2018, labelling it the “worst deal ever”.

The pact aimed to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons in return for sanctions relief and is enshrined in a 2015 Security Council resolution.

But Washington argues that it can trigger the snapback process because the resolution still names it as a participant to the nuclear deal.

In January this year, the two nations were on the brink of triggering a world war after US forces assassinated Iranian major general Qassem Soleimani during a missile attack in Iraq.
