Wildfire burning in Monte Vista forces evacuations

A section of Monte Vista in Colorado’s San Luis Valley has been ordered to evacuate because of a wildfire.

Multiple fire departments and law enforcement agencies are fighting the Monte Vista fire.

An evacuation center has been set up at the Ski Hi Stampede rodeo center, according to the Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Office.

A red flag warning for fire danger is posted until 8 p.m. Wednesday for the area by the National Weather Service. Winds are gusting to 35 mph and the humidity is in single digits.

The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control has taken over command of the Monte Vista fire, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Wednesday afternoon a helicopter was dropping water on the fire, according to the DFPC. The state has sent two engines, and incident commander and a battalion chief to aid local fire fighters from Monte Vista and Del Norte.
