Ursula von der Leyen has called for Brexit talks to be “revitalised” in July in an effort to secure a deal before the end of the year.

The European Commission President met Boris Johnson in an attempt to inject new momentum into flagging negotiations between the EU and the UK.

After the meeting, the UK Prime Minister said he saw “no point” why talks should continue past summer.

In a released video, Ms von der Leyen said: “We noted the UK’s decision to not request an extension.

“The transition period will therefore end of December 31, 2020.

“Four rounds have been completed and texts exchanged despite the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We agreed that new momentum was required to intensify the talks in July to conclude a deal before the end of 2020.”
