‘Verhofstadt’s EU army would undermine NATO and give green light to Putin’

Daniel Kawczynski said the idea, which has also been backed by among others French President Emmanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission would represent the greatest single threat to peace in his lifetime – while comparing said the result would be “like Dad’s Army”. Mr Verhoftstadt floated the idea once more in a tweet in response to US President Donald Trump, who has confirmed he is pulling 12,000 US troops out of Germany, citing the country’s failure to pay a minimum of two percent of GDP annually into the alliance.

Mr Verhofstadt proclaimed: “Germany and EU continue to be bullied by @realDonaldTrump. “The problem is not money.

“EU countries combined are second biggest military spender (with China).

“Real problem is 27 armies and 27 budgets.

“Time for a real European defence market, strategy and army.”

However, Shrewsbury and Atcham MP Mr Kawczynski was unimpressed.

He told Express.co.uk: “The single greatest impediment to the creation of a supra-national state is leaving on December 31, the United Kingdom.

“And this is going to be a green light for the Euro-fanatics such as Mr Verhofstadt to now bully the remaining non-eurozone countries into adopting the euro, and also to ensure that there is the next plank of the supra-national state, namely this European army.

“So there will be massive twin pressures on countries like Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, whereby they have to ditch their currencies and also comply with the creation of a single European army.

“I think that will probably be the single greatest threat to the threat to the common security of our continent in our lifetime.”

Mr Kawcyznski also took the opportunity to compare Mr Verhofstadt to a character from a classic British sitcom.

I equate a European army to a Dad’s Army and Mr Verhofstadt is Captain Mainwaring

Daniel Kawczynski

He said: “I equate a European army to a Dad’s Army and Mr Verhofstadt is Captain Mainwaring.

“It would probably only operate on a Saturday morning and the Russians would invade on the Monday.”

The former Belgian Prime Minister-turned MEP, who is the European Union’s Brexit representative, was “writing cheques he cannot cash” in talking up the possibility of a European army, Mr Kawczynski said.

He added: “There are six incredibly important countries which are at the moment inextricably linked to the defence of our continent that are not members of the European Union and never will be.

“Two of them are permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States and Great Britain.

“Three are incredibly important in the Atlantic Ocean in preventing a conflagration between Russia and America – Canada, Iceland and Norway.

“And Turkey is crucial to us in holding back the threat from ISIS and other nefarious organisations in the Middle East.

“Anything which pushes away America, Canada, Iceland, Norway, Britain or Turkey, currently NATO members would create massive instability on our continent and would give the green light to Russia to continue its conduct in the Baltic States and other areas.

“Because obviously people like Mr Verhofstadt wants to usurp the supremacy of NATO and create a single European army as an alternative NATO.”

Mr Kawczynski, 48, said: “Now twice in our grandparents lifetimes, the United Kingdom at massive cost in terms of British lives and treasure, has had to come in and sort out huge military problems on the continent of Europe.

“We cannot sacrifice another generation in doing that.

“And the only thing that is preventing the possibility of war is the power of NATO, an organisation by the way has not lost a square inch of territory since its inception 70 years ago.

“It does what it says on the tin, it works.

“And a lot of its power is predicated in the strength of the United States of America, and at a time of global tension with China and Russia, any means to usurp or deviate from that NATO policy I think is not only madness, but it is highly irresponsible.”
