A thug with a swastika on his forehead used a makeshift flamethrower to attack a mum and daughter in a racially motivated attack, police say.

Authorities have now launched a manhunt after the victims were assaulted in Perth, Western Australia.

An aboriginal woman, 40, and her teenage daughter were walking through a shopping centre car park when a man approached them last Saturday at about 6.20pm.

He yelled ‘racial obscenities’ before using a deodorant can and lighter to make an improvised flamethrower to spray at them.

Officers said the mum received minor injuries, but she could have been “seriously injured”.

The man, who had a white swastika painted on his forehead, fled the scene after the attack in the Perth suburb of Gosnells.

Police have launched an image of a man they say they want to speak to.

Detective Senior Sergeant Sean Bell said: “He yelled racial obscenities before preparing a can of deodorant into a makeshift flamethrower with a cigarette lighter and spraying it into the direction of the woman and her daughter.

“Thankfully she only received minor injuries but the potential to be more seriously injured was certainly there.”

The comments “were that vile, they don't bear worth repeating”, he said.

He continued: "Any assault on a mother and her daughter simply going about their lawful business trying to get something to eat for dinner is atrocious.

"But when you add in the racial element it's certainly not tolerated by society and we treat it very seriously."

Western Australia Police described the suspect as being fair skinned, about 40-years-old and 5ft7.

He was wearing a black button up long sleeve shirt, black baggy trousers and an oversized red necktie.

The detective added: “We are treating this cowardly and random attack on a woman and her child, doing nothing more than walking to the shops in the early evening, very seriously.

“This type of behaviour is not acceptable and is not tolerated within our community.
