Racist graffiti daubed on mural for England stars hours after show of support

Repulsive racist graffiti has been daubed over a mural in Darlington dedicated to England’s 2020 football squad.

The disgusting message was scrawled over the mural in the County Durham just hours after people staged a demonstration in support of Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Jadon Sancho, who have received horrific racist abuse since England missed out in the final of Euro 2020.

Unlike the patriots proudly showing their support for England, the cowardly racists acted to conceal their identities, vandalising the mural with their sickening message overnight when no one was looking.

The message, which The Star has chosen not to repeat, contains white-supremacist conspiracy theories and makes itself clear that it is targeted at the three members of England’s squad, TeesideLive reports.

The mural is situated close to another design dedicated to Arthur Wharton, the first fully professional black footballer and, at the time, the world’s fastest man.

Wharton was only 19 years old when he was signed for Darlington FC in 1883, the same age as Bukayo Saka when he did England proud at Euro 2020.

Another wall near his memorial has the shirt numbers of Rashford, Saka, and Sancho, which was one of the targets for the disgusting vandalism.

A mural in Manchester dedicated to Marcus Rashford had also previously been vandalised, but people had turned up in droves to show their support for the football star.

In Darlington, more than 50 people turned up on Friday night for a rally in support of the three players, with members taking the knee to show their support.

Stand Up to Racism North East condemned the graffiti.

In a statement, it said: "Yesterday 50 people with Stand Up To Racism – Darlington took part in #TakeTheKnee in Darlington at the Arthur Wharton Mural.

"Overnight a cowardly racist has decided to spread hatred. We condemn this racist graffiti and we stand in absolute solidarity with the Arthur Wharton Foundation (who have already painted over this vile abuse).

"Anti-racists are the majority and cowardly racists are not welcome in Darlington or the North East."
