Russia has claimed it “thwarted” three Ukrainian drone strikes on Moscow in the early hours of Tuesday (September 5).
The Ministry of Defence posted three near-identical updates between 2.15am and 3.30am alleging the attacks but added that all drones had been intercepted.
Roughly four hours later, they claimed that Ukrainian drones had been shot down over Crimea, a peninsula illegally annexed by the Kremlin 2014.
A Moscow Oblast official posted photos of what she claimed was an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) laden with explosives that was downed in a small town northwest of the capital.
The capital’s mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the drones “were trying to carry out an attack on Moscow”.

The Russian MoD ministry said that its air defence systems destroyed two drones over the Kaluga and Tver regions, which border the Moscow region.
They also claimed to have downed a drone over the Istra district of the Moscow region, which appeared to be confirmed by Istra administrator Tatiana Vitusheva.
On her Telegram this morning, she posted four pictures, including two of a destroyed drone and two of a small building hit by the debris – a window appears to be broken but no further damage was sustained.
She said: “According to preliminary data, the UAV shot down over the territory of the urban district of Istra was handicraft and carried explosive elements. This is evidenced by the initial inspection of the identified wreckage of the downed aircraft. Currently, the wreckage has been collected and sent for examination.”

She added: “Let me remind you that the drone was destroyed by air defence systems at 4.15am (local time) in the sky over the territory of the urban district of Istra.
“As a result of the fall of debris, an outbuilding in the SNT ‘Vysokovoltnik’ caught fire. The fire has been extinguished.
“The blast caused minor damage to 5 nearby private houses. Municipal services continue bypassing residents and inspecting households, cleaning up garbage and broken glass fragments.”
Mayor Sobyanin added that drone debris in the Tver region fell in the Zavidovo village.
