Met Office issues new weather warning as sub-zero ice breeze and rain sweeps UK

Further yellow weather warnings for snow and rain have been issued across parts of the UK.

With the unseasonal freezing conditions continuing, the Met Office has extended weather warnings across parts of the Midlands, north-west England, Wales and Scotland.

The snow warnings had initially been due to end on Wednesday (March 14) afternoon but will now last until 4am on Thursday (March 15).

Yellow warnings for rain are in place for most of Wales, with only southern coastal areas exempt, while all of Northern Ireland is covered, as well as some parts of northern England.

The snow warning covers much of Scotland as well as much of north-west England.

The Met Office has warned that “persistent rain” could cause disruption throughout northern England, including in Leeds and Manchester.

Met Office chief forecaster Dan Suri said that an area of low pressure would lead to blustery weather in England, with rain on the way.

Mr Suri said: “As we head through the second half of the week conditions turn milder, wetter and windier from the west.

"This change to milder conditions will be preceded by some snow over parts of northern England and Scotland later on Wednesday, mainly over higher ground.”

Further weather disruption comes after Storm Larisa battered large parts of the UK last week, with drivers stuck for over seven hours on the M62 after snow brought the motorway to a standstill.

The weekend is also expected to be cold, with further strong winds.

A Met Office forecast for Friday to Sunday said: “Fairly unsettled and windy at times.

“Mild for most on Friday and Saturday, but colder conditions could continue to affect the far north of Scotland throughout.”
