Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could have become two of the central figures of the Royal Family when Prince Charles eventually becomes King, a royal expert has claimed.

The Sussexes stepped back from their senior royal roles last year and have since shared on several occasions the struggles they faced within the institution.

On a recent podcast with Dax Shepard, Harry said he first realised he “didn’t want the job” in his early 20s, saying: “I've seen behind the curtain, I've seen the business model and seen how this whole thing works and I don't want to be part of this.”

But Russell Myers, the Daily Mirror’s royal correspondent, suggested the “business model” Harry witnessed could very well have changed in his favour had he remained in the Royal Family.

“What’s he talking about ‘I’ve seen the business model, I’ve seen how these things work’?” he asked on Pod Save the Queen.

“Harry and Meghan were going to be front and centre of a new business model when Charles was taking over.

“Arguably this has been coming to the forefront over recent years and he would have got more of a say with what was happening with a slimmed-down monarchy.”

Harry’s father Charles has long-been reported to be interesting in shrinking the monarchy by cutting down the number of official senior royals after the Queen dies.

This, according to royal biographer, is because he wants to save costs and “make people be worth the money that they get from the taxpayer”.

Pod Save the Queen host Ann Gripper read the “business model” comment in a different light, though.

“But isn’t the business model also because you are taking money from the state and the people, the people feel like they own you,” she said.

“And you have to give away more of yourself and your life and don’t have a right to say ‘no’, ‘back off’ ‘leave me alone’.”

Harry’s eagerly-anticipated mental health documentary, The Me You Can't See, has since aired on Apple TV+.

In it, the prince bravely opened up further about his struggles within the Royal Family and claimed he even resorted to drugs and alcohol.
