Police are hunting a masked gunman after he opened fire inside a shopping centre which left one person injured and others fearing for their life in Texas.

Frantic shoppers had to stay inside The Killeen Mall after police issued a shelter-in-place order as they put the centre into lockdown.

A man was found suffering from gunshots wounds in the torso and his leg inside one of the stores, according to The Killeen Daily Herald.

He was rushed to hospital in Temple, Texas, and his current condition remains unclear.

The Killeen Police Department described the crime as "fluid" and said they are unsure whether the shooting was random or premeditated, reports The Sun.

They confirmed that they had cleared the area and are still looking for the suspect who was dressed in a black hoodie, white beanie and a white mask.

A witness said they heard multiple shots inside the mall and believe they heard six in total, according to 25 News.

Killeen Police Chief Charles Kimble said: “Our first priority is to safely get everyone out of the mall, tend to any injuries, search the mall for any possible additional shooters, and then we will systematically start the investigation."

Officers are reviewing witness statements, the mall's security footage, and video that may have been captured.
