King Charles takes legal battle to Elon Musk and Twitter over unpaid rent

King Charles' Crown Estate is suing Elon Musk's Twitter over alleged unpaid rent on its London headquarters.

A spokesperson for the Crown Estate told The Telegraph earlier this week that the court proceedings relate to a building in London's West End.

They added the Crown Estate had tried to contact Twitter about the alleged rent arrears.

The claim has reportedly been filed against Twitter Inc and its UK subsidiary in the High Court.

A Crown Estate spokesperson told CNN that discussions between the companies are ongoing. They identified the property as 20 Air Street.

Twitter signed a £2.6m-a-year lease for the third floor of the London property in 2021.

However, according to The Telegraph, this legal dispute is believed to be regarding a first-floor office in the same building that has been occupied since 2014.

A member of staff told The Telegraph that Twitter still had a presence at Air Street, despite all company signage having been removed.

The Crown Estate administers thousands of acres of Crown-owned land. Its vast collection of commercial buildings and land generate profits collected by the government for public spending.

Twitter previously ordered staff at its office in Singapore to work from home following reports rent wasn't paid on time there.

According to CNN, the company is also facing a lawsuit over alleged unpaid rent from a commercial landlord regarding its offices in San Francisco.

The news comes after Tesla CEO Musk – who is now the world's second richest man after losing the title of richest to Bernard Arnault in December – bought Twitter.

Musk made more than half of the social media giant's staff redundant following the $44billion (£35bn) deal, which was finally completed in October following lengthy legal disputes.
