US Vice President Kamala Harris has delivered a fiery slapdown of China in a major speech to America’s South East Asia allies. Ms Harris’s address to foreign dignitaries in Singapore on Tuesday was aimed as a warning at the regime of Xi Jinping and also to reassure US allies of the White House’s strategic commitments in the wake of the fiasco in Afghanistan. In particular, the US Vice President looked to promise regional partners they would not be left to choose between Washington and Beijing.

Vice-President Harris said: “We know that Beijing continues to coerce, to intimidate, and to make claims to the vast majority of the South China Sea.

“Beijing’s actions continue to undermine the rules-based order and threaten the sovereignty of nations.”

“These unlawful claims have been rejected by the 2016 arbitral tribunal decision, and Beijing’s actions continue to undermine the rules-based order and threaten the sovereignty of nations,”  she continued.

“The United States stands with our allies and partners in the face of these threats.”

“I must be clear: Our engagement in Southeast Asia and Indo-Pacific is not against any one country, nor is it designed to make anyone choose between countries,” added Ms Harris.

The speech comes amid concerns Chinese strongman Xi Jinping has been “encouraged” by events in Afghanistan.

Earlier this week, Sir Iain Duncan Smith warned China was “already preparing” for an invasion of Taiwan.

Sir Iain told the former Brexit Party leader that China was now seeing the US and Joe Biden as “relatively weak.”

Sir Iain told Farage on Sky News: “China has now recognised the Taliban and their foreign minister met with the leader of the Taliban and they are therefore very well placed to support them, it is also interesting that Russia is in the same boat.

“Now China, as soon as that happened, a day later, the Global Times…which is the mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Pary…President Xi pretty much wrote an editorial which said that lookout Taiwan when the war begins the Americans aren’t coming.

“So they are already preparing.

“I gather there was some like 10 or 14 flights over Taiwan today by Chinese military aircraft.”

He added: “And there was a statement released late yesterday to say in terms that China now says to Taiwan either give up or we are going to take you back.

“So all of this has encouraged China to believe that America and Joe Biden are fairly weak and they won’t do anything because they are running away from Afghanistan.

“This is the point that is really important for us to understand we are in an ideological war if we like it or not with those totalitarian states who are now growing in power.

“China will soon be the world’s largest economy.”
