Joe Biden inauguration schedule: Timeline of events for new US President ceremony

Biden inauguration: National Guard man areas in Washington

Joe Biden will take his place in the White House on Wednesday, as he officially takes the reins from Donald Trump as President of the United States. His inauguration will confirm his appointment as the 46th president, and the day will feature a whole host of celebratory events.

President-elect Biden won November’s US election, after sealing 306 electoral votes, compared with Trump’s 232.

The election win was certified in the middle of December, after a number of recounts in closely-fought states.

Biden’s total of 306 electoral votes was the same number that Trump won in the 2016 US election.

At the time, Trump described the win as a “landslide” against his opponent, Hillary Clinton.

“In this battle for the soul of America, democracy prevailed,” said Biden, after the win was confirmed.

“We the people voted. Faith in our institutions held. The integrity of our elections remains intact. And so, now it is time to turn the page. To unite. To heal.

“Nothing, not even a pandemic, or an abuse of power can extinguish that flame [of democracy].

“We owe these public servants a debt of gratitude. Our democracy survived because of them.”
