Mr Khamenei referenced Mr Trump’s accusations of voter fraud during an address in which he insisted Iran did not take sides in the US election. However, the Trump administration has recently imposed important sanctions on Iran’s oil industry while Democratic candidate Joe Biden vowed to negotiate a potential re-entry in Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal if he wins the election.

Mr Khamenei said: “If you look at their own situation, it’s interesting to watch.

“This is American democracy.”

However, he reiterated previous remarks that the US election result “is none of our business, meaning it won’t influence our policy at all.”

He added: “Our policy is clear and well-calculated and people coming and going will have no impact on it.”

But referring to the US as a power, Mr Khamenei said: “Such an empire will not last long.

“It’s obvious that when a regime reaches this point, it will not live for much longer and will be destroyed.

“Of course, some of them if they take office will destroy America sooner, and some others if elected will cause America to be destroyed a bit later.”

Iran’s supreme leader’s speech comes after it was revealed that Mr Trump’s latest sanctions on Iran could give Mr Biden advantage in securing a new nuclear deal should he win the election and decide to enter the talks.

An embargo brought into force last Monday may have been meant to deter a potential agreement, but it could be advantageous for Mr Biden when it comes to the negotiations.

However, the potential discussions would entail lifting a number of embargoes brought in by President Trump.

“The regime in Iran uses the petroleum sector to fund the destabilising activities of the IRGC-QF.

“The Iranian regime continues to prioritise its support for terrorist entities and its nuclear program over the needs of the Iranian people.”

Alireza Miryousefi, a spokesman for Iran’s mission to the United Nations condemned the move.

He said: “The US’s hostility towards the Iranian people has no limit.

“The US is sanctioning Iranian entities that have already been sanctioned under another phony charge. However, the US’s addiction to sanctions has not paid off.”
