Incredible footage shows meteor burning up the sky over Scotland

Members of the public have taken to social media in disbelief after thinking they may have spotted a meteor soaring over a town in Scotland.

Twitter users shared video clips to the social media website, capturing a glowing light streaking through the night sky, leaving a burning trail in its wake.

One user wrote: "Anyone else see a meteor burning up in the sky a few mins ago? Going south to north over the West coast of Scotland #meteor."

A second penned: "Wow the comet tonight #comet #asteroid #meteor."

The comet could be seen from different locations throughout Scotland, with one person writing: "Have I just seen a meteor fly over Johnstone??" and another asking: "Did I legit just see a shooting star in Motherwell or is that something crashing out the sky?"

A few users saw the meteor over Glasgow, with one person posting: "Meteor over Glasgow/Cumbernauld tonight around 10pm. So bright! #meteor #Glasgow" and another, "Anyone in #glasgow Just see this??? Was all different colours like a firework but silent? Maybe part of a meteor?."

UK Meteor Network tweeted: "So far we have received 35 public reports about a fireball spotted at 21:00 and a couple of our cameras caught it."

They later issued an update confirming that the number had gone up to "83 reports and counting", before stating they had received reports from Scotland and Northern Ireland that "just surpassed 200."

The network, which includes 170 cameras that record meteors across the UK, said that they "are investigating to ascertain what the object was – meteor or space debris."
