Officers confirmed the body was not that of young mum Patricia Allen, who mysteriously vanished with her two kids in 1975.
"The body that has been found is definitely 100% not that of Patricia Allen," a police source added.
The headless corpse was discovered at around 5pm in woodlands not far from the Salcombe Harbour Hotel.
The woods below Devon Road and above Bennett Road are popular with dog walkers but have now been cordoned off.
Despite no bodies being found, Patricia Allen's husband Anthony John Allen was convicted of murdering his wife and their children Jonathan, seven, and Victoria, five, in 2002.
He maintained his innocence right up until his death in 2015.
