Horror as headless corpse found while police launch probe into mystery death

A headless corpse has been found in the woods in a horrifying discovery.

The body was discovered near North Sands Cove in Salcombe, Devon, with police saying they were treating the death as "unexplained" as they launched an investigation.

Emergency services have been at the scene since the grisly discovery on Sunday, DevonLive reports.

Bennett Road and Cliff Road have been closed while officers search for clues and forensic teams remain in the area.

A senior police source told Devon Live that the remains have been found "without a head". Officer confirmed they will maintain a large police presence in the coming days.

The discovery has cast a shadow over popular tourist hotspot Salcombe, which is brimming with tourists, and second home owners.

A senior police source has confirmed that the body which has been found is not that of Patricia Allen, whose disappearance with her children 46 years ago cast a shadow over the town.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Enquiries remain ongoing into an unexplained death after a body was found in a wooded area near Bennett Road, Salcombe, on Sunday, June 27.

“A number of enquiries will be carried out in Salcombe over the coming days, and it is likely that the local community will continue to see a high level of police activity."

Officers confirmed the body was not that of young mum Patricia Allen, who mysteriously vanished with her two kids in 1975.

"The body that has been found is definitely 100% not that of Patricia Allen," a police source added.

The headless corpse was discovered at around 5pm in woodlands not far from the Salcombe Harbour Hotel.

The woods below Devon Road and above Bennett Road are popular with dog walkers but have now been cordoned off.

Despite no bodies being found, Patricia Allen's husband Anthony John Allen was convicted of murdering his wife and their children Jonathan, seven, and Victoria, five, in 2002.

He maintained his innocence right up until his death in 2015.
