Prince Harry’s return for the unveiling of Princess Diana’s statue is in “serious doubt”, an author has claimed.
The event to show off the new statue of Diana was seen as the moment where William and Harry, her sons, could put their differences to one side after long-standing tensions.
But now it appears that Harry may well not be at the unveiling of the statue of their mother in July.
Meghan was unable to make Prince Philip's funeral due to pregnancy, and it is unknown if she will be able to take her newborn and Archie to the UK.
But it is claimed the fallout following their Oprah interview could determine their return in future.
Phil Dampier, author of Royally Suited: Harry and Meghan In Their Own Words, told Sun Online: “I personally don’t think Meghan will return to the UK.
“And there must now be a serious doubt as to whether Harry will come over for the unveiling of a statue for Princess Diana on what would have been her 60th birthday in July.”
At the same time it is felt that the rifts and bad publicity that the Royal Family has endured could be forcing its terminal decline.
Dame Hilary Mantel, the author of Wolf Hall, has said that the monarchy is entering its “end game” with William possibly the final king.
“I think it’s the end game. I don’t know how much longer the institution will go on,” she told the Telegraph.
"I’m not sure if it will outlast William. So I think it will be their last big era. I wish the Queen had felt able to abdicate because Charles has had to wait such a long time."
She added that the Queen has refused to abdicate as she sees it as a “sacred task” – even though the public do view it as a position from which you can stand down.
Dame Hilary added: "I wonder if she’s the only person who really believes in the monarchy now, and I’m sure she believes with all her heart."
The Queen remains popular among the British people while a recent poll found 63 percent of the public in favour of the monarchy.
