Data has revealed that nine in every ten coronavirus cases in England are the Omicron variant as infection rates reach record levels.
The mutant variant is sweeping the nation, while experts raise fears it’s being missed as symptoms are similar to that of the common cold.
Thanks to the data provided by people who have caught coronavirus, doctors can reveal the tell-tale signs you may be infected.
Experts claimed that you may be able to hear the first sign of the Omicron variant before you show any other symptoms.
This is because a link has been made between Omicron and a hoarse or scratchy voice.
According to Doctor Angelique Coetzee, a South African GP, who first discovered the variant, common symptoms of the mutant variant include muscle aches, fatigue, a scratchy throat and night sweats.
While scientists running the Covid Symptoms Study app at Zoe and Kings College found the top five Omicron symptoms were a runny nose, headache, fatigue (either mild or severe), sneezing, and throat issues.
Like Alpha and Delta before it, Omicron – the now dominant strain in the UK, as reported by Coventry Live.
New analysis by the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) found that more than 90 per cent of community cases were consistent with the strain.
While more transmissible than previous strains, tests have shown Omicron is not generally as potent – a finding reflected in the relatively low rate of hospitalisations and deaths.
There were 189,846 new confirmed positive tests for coronavirus yesterday (December 31).
The boom in cases during December led to Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales introducing fresh restrictions from Boxing Day.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resisted such measures but is under increasing pressure to find new ways to drive down infection rates.
