Wildlife officers on Wednesday in Evergreen freed a cow elk of a trash can lid that had been stuck around her neck.
The mature elk in distress was spotted near the rodeo grounds, 29830 Stagecoach Blvd., on Tuesday and Wednesday and a wildlife rescue team caught up with her, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
The cow was sedated and Officer Joe Walter removed the lid from her neck, CPW said on Twitter. The victim was given a reversal agent to counter the sedation. Walter briskly rubbed the elk’s shoulder and then clapped his hands together directly over the animal’s head, bringing her slowly, and a bit unsteady, to her feet.
“This old cow is now on her way, free of the obstruction around her neck,” CPW said.
