Commerce City man arrested in connection with shooting death of burglary suspect

A Commerce City man who told officers he fired gunshots at burglary suspects early Monday morning is being held for investigation of murder, police said.

William Paul Schuette, 20, is in custody in connection to a shooting death, according to police.

At about 4:50 a.m. officers responded to the 10700 block of Belle Creek Boulevard on a report of a burglary and shots fired at the Haraf Foods Market, according to a news release.

When officers arrived they found a vehicle that had crashed into several other vehicles. Inside the crashed vehicle was a male, described as a burglary suspect, who was shot dead, police said.

Investigators determined that several males were burglarizing the food market. Schuette, who lives nearby, allegedly fired a gun at the burglary suspects.

Two burglary suspects fled the area on foot, police said. Officers found one suspect, a juvenile, who was detained and questioned. The victim shot dead has not yet been identified.

The nearby Belle Creek Charter School switched from in-person learning to a fully remote schedule today because of the incident, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
