City Park Jazz is returning this summer for its 35th season, starting June 13. The popular outdoor program offers nine free Sunday concerts staged at the City Park Pavilion.
Some of Colorado’s best are on this year’s slate, including the return of Brass Band Extravaganza on June 20. The highlight may come on July 25 when there will be a special Celebration of Denver Jazz Heritage featuring the El Chapultepec All Stars, particularly notable after Denver lost the iconic venue earlier this year. That evening will also celebrate the life of Denver jazz legend Freddy Rodriguez Sr., who died in March 2020 from COVID-19. His son, Freddy Jr., will play at that show.

“We couldn’t be more excited right now,” says Andy Bercaw, president of the City Park Jazz board of directors. “Last year was tough for the whole world, so there’s no need to belabor the heartbreak. But Denver’s been on its game, (with residents) getting vaccinated and pulling together as a community to lift each other up — and that’s what City Park Jazz is, after all: a celebration of community.”
The event began in 1986 and only features local musicians. Up to 12,000 people pack City Park each week to enjoy some of Denver’s best music. Selected vendors and food trucks round out the event.
The 2020 season was cut short and moved online due to the pandemic. In a press release, officials from City Park Jazz noted that there will some safety protocols in place for this summer, but did not elaborate on what they are.

The concerts are on Sunday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. (except for June 20, which runs from 5 to 8 p.m.)
