The young boy, 7, was attacked in the garden of his home in Oklahoma. The little boy, called James McNeelis, was playing outside with the pet on the evening of October 20. After he disappeared and failed to answer calls to come home for dinner, his family called 911.

At 7.35pm that evening James’s body was discovered by his father Michael McNeelis.

A neighbour, speaking to KOTV said: “We heard the bloodcurdling screams of ‘No!'”

The neighbour, called Shannon Edinson, told KOTV that she heard screams coming from James’s house.

She added: “We knew something was wrong.

“As a mother, you know that scream.

“If anybody has ever heard that scream, you know that scream.

“Something was catastrophically wrong.”

The little boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unclear if the dog will be euthanised.

It is currently being held at a dog pound.

Creek County Sheriff Bret Bowling told KOCO: “It doesn’t look like any foul play.

“Our preliminary indications or investigations indicate is some kind of animal.”

The family had recently rescued the dog after finding it “dumped on the side of the road”.

James’s father shared a post on Facebook that read: “‘He was so full of life and light.

“He was going to change the world.

“And he still is.

“His light will change the world.

“We feel alone and lost without him.

“We’re doing all we can but it’s just hard.

“Everything just hurts without my little boy here.”

A GoFundMe page has been created by James’s mother, Hannah Markley.
