Beano to make more adult comics mocking politicians like Boris Johnson

Beano boss Mike Stirling has revealed he is planning to introduce more adult-focused satirical comic books that make fun of politicians and those in power.

The editorial director of the long-running kids' favourite has been left delighted by the recent surge in sales of his first-ever BeanoLD comic.

Dubbed ‘the Beano for adults’ it was added as a pullout in a November issue of the regular children’s comic and featured jokey tales about Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings, as well as celebrating Covid-19 heroes like Marcus Rashford and Capt Sir Tom Moore.

It’s been such a hit with adult readers it was a sell-out and chiefs had to print more copies. Some are now selling on eBay upwards of £35.

Dundee-based Mike is now thinking of doing more editions of BeanoLD, making it a Christmas tradition.

He said: "It seems to have proved very popular, I’m pleased to say. Our biggest-selling issue of the year, so far.

"The Christmas Special usually tops the charts, but it has competition this time.

"I struggled to track down a copy for my mum as all the local shops were sold out by lunchtime on release day, and some copies have been selling for over £35 on eBay.

"We’ve reprinted, as we were worried about fans not being able to get hold of a copy or having to pay more than the cover price.

"We want as many people as possible to enjoy it. That was the whole point.

"The plan was always for our regular readers to be able to gift this to a grown-up who needed cheering-up after a year like no other.

“Maybe, in future, it could become a new British Christmas tradition, like the John Lewis adverts?”

He said that the team behind the comics took inspiration from witty panto shows that have been forced to close down this year due to the pandemic.

“We used all the topical gags left on the shelf by pantomimes being cancelled this year,” he said.

“We celebrated some notable goodies, like Marcus Rashford, Captain Sir Tom Moore and Greta Thunberg. These are the figures our readers have told us they admire. It’s easy to understand why.

“Every panto also has a few folks deserving a good natured heckle. Beano has always poked fun at authority figures, especially when they deserve it, so it was an open goal to include some political personalities.

“We chose the two who Beano readers mentioned most when we speak to them, as it’s important everyone gets the jokes, even in a grown-up ‘BeanoLD’."

New issues of the Beano are available in stores every Wednesday or can be delivered straight to your door with a subscription from Beano.com.
