An alleged petty thief appeared to have his penis bitten off by another man in front of a baying mob screaming encouragement in a chilling example of "jungle justice".

A video of the incident has started doing the rounds online and was shared on Twitter by the Marxist Party of Nigeria, which says the incident took place in the Bakassi Peninsula, Nigeria.

Reports online suggest the man was a petty thief who stole something worth "less than a dollar".

In the stomach-churning clip, one of the crowd suddenly kneels next to the already-naked man and literally bites off his penis.

Others in the sickening blood-thirsty mob then stone him as he writhes helpless on the floor.

The aforementioned Marxist party tweeted: “This is why we should outlaw jungle justice. Because of stealing something less than a dollar, his penis was bitten off.”

Just after the callous attacker is seen spitting out the victim’s manhood, others move in with large rocks and pummel the helpless man on the ground.

The comments share concerns about mob justice.

Lugard Ekhator wrote: “This is pure wickedness please. This is so barbaric and the perpetrators should be made to face the full weight of the law."

Ficollins added: “This is so wrong. How do bite another man's genitals?”

Also in Nigeria, police in Lagos State said a mob carried out "jungle justice" on two men, who allegedly robbed a cashier in the Igando area of the state on Sunday.

The mob set the victims ablaze and burnt them beyond recognition.

Dakuku Peterside, a high-ranking Nigerian politician, said his country was suffering from an "epidemic" of jungle justice, extrajudicial killings – where an alleged criminal is publicly humiliated, beaten and then executed by vigilantes or an angry mob.

"The frequency at which they occur shocks our shared sensibilities," he wrote for Vanguard.

"Every week, we are served on social media with images and videos of an angry mob killing and desecrating the bodies of citizens who are victims of this madness sweeping through our society.

"Life almost has little or no value on our streets. A mere accusation of blasphemy or a shout of 'ole, ole, ole' may mark the end of the life of a Nigerian."
