Scotland had raised hopes at the tournament spread across Europe after producing a spirited display in a 0-0 draw with England at Wembley Stadium last Friday. But the team crashed out of Euro 2020 by finishing bottom of Group XX following a crushing 3-1 defeat Croatia at Hampden Park in Edinburgh on Tuesday evening. Meanwhile, England topped the group after a 1-0 victory over the Czech Republic at Wembley.
Following the Scotland game, the First Minister tweeted: “Not to be, but thank you @ScotlandNT for taking us to our first men’s tournament in 23 years – you’ve played your hearts out and we’ve been proud to cheer you on.”
Ms Sturgeon has continued to campaign for a second referendum on Scottish independence – despite insistence from Boris Johnson one won’t take place anytime soon.
The SNP has also come under heavy attack from UK ministers for blaming Westminster over shortcomings that have been attributed to the Scottish Government.
Now Britons have used this point to brutally mock the tweet from Ms Sturgeon following the Scotland game.
Reacting to our initial story, one person wrote: “I’m very surprised that she hasn’t demanded a replay yet.
“The Westminster government are obviously to blame for the result.”
A second Express.co.uk reader commented: “And still they’ll somehow blame England for their demise for not letting them win.
“Next time they’ll be calling for the Barnet formula to be applied to their group.”
Another person said: “Did I hear Sturgeon congratulate England for making it through? Wait! No, I didn’t.”
A fourth reader added: “Can’t accept any result that goes against her.”
First Minister and SNP leader Ms Sturgeon had also faced a furious backlash from Scottish football fans after congratulating the team or making it to its first men’s tournament in 23 years.
One person fumed: “Sorry FM, but I, for one, am heartily sick and tired of being ‘courageous losers’.

“That was a must-win game for us and we didn’t even come close.
“If Wales can do it, so should we. Excuses and platitudes just don’t cut it, any more.
“Simply not good enough.”
Another Scottish fan called on the First Minister to “congratulate your neighbours,” adding that she should “show a bit of class.”
A third Scottish commenter tweeted: “Once in a generation result tonight.
“Is it true you’ve called for a replay next week?”
