The BBC should be dismantled and scrapped, according to conservative commentator Alex Deane. Speaking to talkRADIO, Mr Deane pointed to the recent outrage surrounding BBC Breakfast’s Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty. The presenter pair came under fire this week for their dismissive remarks about the flag and a portrait of the Queen at the end of an interview with communities secretary Robert Jenrick.

Mr Deane said that the BBC should be “dismantled,” pointing out that “it’s only our flag they’re embarrassed by”.

This comes as Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden also criticised the BBC’s “sneering” attitude at the union flag.

Mr Deane told host Mark Dolan: “They did mock Jenrick and I think Oliver Dowden is completely right to call out the BBC.

“I agree with everything you just said about our country. I’m very proud to be British and I would call myself patriotic.”

He continued: “But even if you’re not patriotic, if you’re employed by the British Broadcasting Corporation, if you’re not willing to be positive about the UK the least you can do is be professional and not sneer and laugh when a minister of the crown naturally has the flag of the country of which he is a minister and a picture of its head of state on his wall.”

Mr Dolan responded: “A government figure in the US would probably lose their job if they didn’t do an interview with the flag behind them.

“The President has the stars and stripes on his lapel.”

Mr Deane hit out at the “BBC journalists who would never laugh at any other politician flying any other flag”.

He continued: “It’s only our flag they’re embarrassed by. It’s only our flag they think it’s okay to sneer and laugh at.

“If they interviewed a French minister, and they had a tricolour behind them – do you think they would laugh and make a joke about it? I don’t.”

Mr Dolan said: “What sticks with me is that we are paying through the nose for this British bashing.”

Mr Deane said it was time to “dismantle the BBC” in the wake of the outrage.

He explained: “Its time has well and truly passed. I feel sorry for this Director General – he must be tearing his hair out.

“He declares he is bringing a new overhaul of the BBC to ensure it’s not overly-biased and he has this on the very same day.

“But I’m afraid the ship has sailed. It is un-reformable and un-salvageable. They should scrap it now.”
